Real world clocks like those at the National Physical Laboratory’s hydrogen masers serve to precisely define time down to nanosecond accuracy. Together with hundreds of others around the globe, these devices known as atomic clocks help ensure our global shared sense of time remains accurate.
Blades in the Dark employs an alternative clock mechanism to monitor long-term progress of events or activities. Our “Progress Clock” consists of a segmented circle representing time taken for big in-game events (such as raising prison alarms or finding dead guards) to occur (like raising alarms of prison or finding one dead). When actions (like leaving doors open, creating disturbances, killing guards etc ) take place they fill segments on this clock until enough segments have been filled that an important event ( such as prison guards searching for player characters to occur). Once all segments have been filled, big events (such as raising prison alarms being raised or finding dead guards found by prison guards) take place and event (like prison guards begin searching for player characters).
A large wheel (known as the main or great wheel) is driven by a single central gear with several small teeth (known as a pinion), which in turn engages a secondary gear with 12:1 gearing known as motion work to power an escapement that drives hour and minute hands.
