Professor Milton Wright probably could never have predicted that when he donated several books about 17th century English poet John Milton in the 1940s, they would eventually grow into what is arguably now one of the largest Milton collections outside the U.S. No other university has come close to matching its holdings and scope.
“Outside of Milton’s Paradise Lost, our library boasts 10 rare copies that have not seen much wear,” according to Fernanda Perrone from Special Collections Library, it also has many exquisite 17th and 18th-century works on Milton and his contemporaries printed on rag paper which does not deteriorate easily compared with more fragile 19th-century books printed on cotton paper, says Fernanda Perrone of Special Collections Library.
J. Elet Milton (1881-1968) was an early resident and staunch supporter of local history in Brewerton. He donated his extensive ledger collection to the Fort Brewerton Historical Society and provided land for what would eventually become Library Street Museum. Milton’s ledgers contain valuable insight into Brewerton’s people and businesses such as construction firms and logging industries.
